Random (City of Heroes)
Shamus Young, the "DM of the Rings" guy, is writing about City of Heroes. He's said some things about it that pique my interest. Do I have any readers here that actually play it?

I don't, but I have some friends who do. Would you like me to point them here?

Sure. Partly I'm curious what servers people play on. Partly I'm curious if it's true that people tend to play many fewer hours a week than with WoW. Partly I'm just curious how many CoH/CoV subscribers there are around.

I currently am.

Shamus claims that people often play CoH/CoV many fewer hours a week than WoW, that it's better for casual and pick-up play, and that people are better about keeping it in check and not letting it eat their lives.

You've played both. How would you rate that assertion?

Depends on the person, largely, but my comparison is flawed as I am not playing with an end-game (whatever that is) 10-30 group of people in CoH that I was in WoW. I play roughly 1-3 hours 3-5 times a week, with the occasional all day Saturday. But I have an easier time being 'done' for the evening, though I will stay longer than that for my boyfriend.

Part of it, for CoH, is that being so old most of the hardcore (what little there was) seems to have moved on, so there is less of the social 'stay up longer' thing.

I would guess that it is slightly easier to keep in check, it is certainly easier to find PUGs you don't want to kill (Because skill means very little, and team play is rewarded even when done poorly) and I have yet to run into a 2 hour mission.

The storyline isn't as compelling, do with that what you will.

That was me. Sorry

Makes sense. Thanks!

Josh and i played it for a while. The character creation was really fun, and the beginning of the game was enjoyable. The background graphics weren't that interesting to me, but the character graphics were pretty cool. I think it had a lot of potential.

We stopped playing because the quests got really repetitive. I do not think this would have been a problem if we had a larger group of players that we were regularly playing with, because we could have handled harder quests earlier and progressed through the game. As it was, it was just the two of us, and we sort of got stuck repeating the same level of quest over and over again in order to level up to move forward.

Fair enough. That makes sense. I'm curious what Shamus will say on that topic when he writes about it, because he's also sensitive to repetitive/boring quests.

Then again, apparently he's having an easy time finding people to group with. I don't know if it's that the game makes that easy, or if he's just that much of a celebrity ;-)

Josh and i are shyer than we appear, so its hard for us to go up and ask to group with random people. When we picked up the game we didn't know anyone in real life that was playing, so we didn't have a built in guild.
The game does have some facilities for making grouping with people easy - particularly you can have a side kick so you can play with someone who is at a really different level than you are. I thought that was really cool.

We haven't gotten as into any game since WOW. We play CoH for a while regularly, without it becoming quite the same level of demand on our time. But, then, we didn't stick with it for nearly as long as WoW either. It could be that part of what makes WoW rewarding is also part of what makes it demanding.

(Although, i really hated WoW when it got to the point where you needed a large guild to raid, and people were expecting others in their guild to have a set large amount of time set aside for it. I wanted it to be easier to pick up for short periods. I guess we did have an easier time with that with CoH than with WoW, but we also didn't get to the same advanced material that we did with WoW. Early on WoW was easy to play with a small level of involvement.)

*wave* Peter and I play pretty regularly - heroes are on Pinnacle server and villains are on Virtue (for the most part).

Looks like I'll have a chance to play a bit now and again. I still need to set my gchat handle, and I'll probably only be playing a day or two a week. But I shall create characters on the appropriate servers when I have time.

I started a character on Pinnacle, but I'm thinking I may retire him. I'm told "Ice Melee" is a pretty poor skillset for a tanker. *shrug*
