Leni Riefenstahl released a new movie in time for her birthday. In fact, she released that film in time for her 100th birthday, and it's her first new release in about 48 years.

She broke her hip in a helicopter crash in Africa at the age of 93. She took up scuba diving in her 80's or 90's (I forget). She was roundly jeered when she accepted a lifetime achievement award in 1997. She's being investigated by the German government right now (just after her August 22nd birthday) for denying the Holocaust -- not that she does, just that there's a Gypsy organization accusing her of it.

The poor woman revolutionized cinema, did what were some of the best movies ever made at the time, invented a surprising number of filming and editing techniques now taken for granted, and she just can't buy a break. I hope that "Impressionen unter Wasser", her latest film, is released in some form in the US. I want to buy a copy just to support her, on principle. She deserves it.

Rob Brezsny again, my (Gemini) horoscope:

My ambitious friend Richard played the part of a tree-with-a-face in a local theatrical production of "Wizard of Oz." In 12 shows, he stood around holding a cardboard painting of a tree in front of himself. "With all the important things you have to do," I asked him, "with all the fun and challenging activities available to occupy your valuable time, why did you choose this dopey task?" With bemused languor he replied, "My life is too crammed with meaning, Robbie. I'm a Drama King, for God's sake -- a junkie for epic storylines. So for once in my life, I decided to do something that had absolutely no purpose. And it renewed me beyond my wildest imagining." I pray that you'll take a page from Richard's book in the coming days, dear Gemini.

Hear that everybody? I'm likely to get even less active for a bit.

That said: don't knock the tree with a face, dude. Even though that's not the sort of sacrilege that, say, knocking the flying monkeys would be. Mmm.... Monkeys.

My bike's going into the shop tomorrow because it's making a funny noise. Could be worse, overall. I went back to boot camp today, beginning the first complete five-week session I'll have done in, oh, like a year and a half. I did most of the final two weeks of the previous session, though.

We did testing today. Apparently I can still run a mile and a half in 12:48, which is around 8.5 minutes a mile. I'm guessing that'll drop to 'round about what my sustained running rate used to be, about ten minutes a mile. I had some weird emotional baggage around that figure once, which would take some explaining. That's down to a weird small twitch now. Do you ever have those little emotional reactions that you want to drown like kittens?

I don't always like my competitive urges. Sometimes I wish they'd just go away and leave me alone. Of course, I'd hate it a lot more if they actually did.

Things are wedging in the back of my mind in a way that suggests that it's time to reevaluate my life goals again. That would explain a lot, looking back at the last few months. There are certain kinds of awkwardness that just don't usually happen to me. I replace them with other kinds of awkwardness :-)
