Calli is using a few more words - "apple" is her latest favorite, which comes out as "ap-buh".

I went to my first parent-teacher conference yesterday. Shanna is doing well, just starting to make some friends at school, and is generally exactly who we thought she was :-)

I got to shoo a snake out of our bathroom with the aid of a broom and some cardboard the other day. Hard for me to be sure, but the back patterns looked a lot like an Eastern Garter Snake, according to Google Image Search. Certainly I'd be surprised if it were anything venomous. There are only a few of those in the states, and the ones in CA are quite distinctive. We think it just slithered in when we had the front door open.

You might be surprised actually. I really thought I spotted a rattler earlier this year, and when I looked it up, I discovered about 5 snakes that just have similar patterns (but no rattle).

I knew it was a rattlesnake because it had no rattle. Not a coral snake, they're red and yellow rather than brown-and-dark-brown mottled/striped. And as it turns out, copperheads and water moccasins (cottonmouths) don't seem to make it to CA.

So actually, it turns out my current strategy of being able to recognize a coral snake and watching for a rattle was pretty good :-)

It *did* look just a bit like a copperhead or a rattlesnake, but that's partly because they vary a lot in color and pattern.

It was so *cute* when I finally pissed it off and it struck at the broom handle. Bear in mind that it was, like, 18 inches long. It would have been less cute with something like an egg snake that could have made me unhappy by biting me (not poisonous - just big and strong).

Sounds good :-) This was a little harmless one so I wasn't too worried... But I'll keep you in mind if that ever changes!

I wouldn't even have needed manly assistance if I hadn't been in the process of lowering the baby to the floor when I noticed and freaked out. :)
